Stranded in Mexico And Not Happy About It

Sun Country cancels last flights of season, passengers left on their own

Dozens of Sun Country passengers are furious after being stranded in Mexico while the weekend snow storm raged on back home in Minnesota.

Hundreds of flights were canceled at Minneapolis-St. Paul International airport on Saturday and Sunday, many coming when all of the airport's runways were closed for eight hours.  Passengers preparing for flights back to the Twin Cities were left abandoned in Mexico when Sun Country canceled their flights.

The Eagan-based airline, in an email to passengers and posting on Facebook and Twitter, said the Saturday flights that were grounded were their last of the season and they would need to find another way home with another carrier.

"There's hundreds of people down here in Mexico that they're leaving stranded that might not have accomodations," said Sean Steen, who called WCCO radio on Sunday from Mazatlan onto tell his story to Roshini Rajkumar. "You have to pay twice the price just to get home, plus you have to pay for your hotel."

Sun Country said it was a difficult day for all of the airlines, but the two most challenging recovery situations for them, were the Los Cabos and Mazatlan flights. 

"We understand the situation with the snowstorm" said Aliecia Dunn, who was also left stranded in Mexico when Sun Country canceled their Saturday flights. "We just feel that it's unacceptable, how they're handling the whole situation. There's nothing that they're doing for anybody."   

A spokesperson for the airline said they gave passengers a full airfare refund to make alternative arrangements. The spokesperson said their agents worked around the clock, some of whom stayed past their shifts to work overnight in the call center, to provide the best service possible to  passengers impacted by all of this. 

Steen wasn't so sure that all happened.

"It's just about Sun Country really not caring about their customers," said Steen. "They're caring more about their bottom line rather than the welfare of their customers and getting us home safely. They'd rather just count the beans."
