ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) — Homeowners on a quiet St. Paul block are shocked to learn someone was killed nearby. It happened Friday night in the 1900 block of Cottage Avenue East in St. Paul. A woman was shot and killed and a man was arrested. Between the passing cars and a bird’s song, there’s not much left to hear along this stretch of Cottage Avenue East in St. Paul. “It’s just really shocking,” Abbie Rennaker said. Until Friday night. “I was hauling in groceries and like a million cop cars zoomed down the block and that never happens,” Caitlin Reed said. Reed lives just down the block. A vigilant member of her neighborhood watch, she says he’s rarely seen a crime in the area. “It’s the best four block radius on the east side,” she said. Investigators say a woman was found shot dead inside a home. Several witnesses were taken to police headquarters, and a man who police say was in a relationship with the woman was arrested without incident. “And it just blew my mind that something like that could happen so close to home,” Reed said. Police have yet to say what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting. But with or without the full story, Reed’s desire to stay safe won’t change. “We are always looking out for our neighbors’ backs, whether we know them or not,” Reed said. “Everyone seems to have an eye and ear out, every day.” Police say the medical examiner will release the victim’s name on Monday, as they work to notify her family members this weekend.
